Tourism in Oberon
With the most spectacular scenery in rural NSW and at the heart of the Tablelands Way experience, a visit to Oberon will delight. Enjoy the laid-back cool country lifestyle and four distinct seasons including intermittent snow falls. 3 hours drive west of Sydney and north of Canberra you reach the high country, breathe in the fresh mountain air and know you are truly on top of the plateau with elevations from 300 to 1,360 metres above sea level.
Oberon was named in 1863, inspired by Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Incredible vistas of the region as you enter from either direction give you the feel of being in Shakespeare country and many of the local roads and buildings are aptly named, such as Titania Motel! Discover more rich history at Oberon’s Museum Precinct.
Fertile grazing produces the region's beef cattle and sheep. Be sure to taste quality local produce at monthly Farmers Markets or relaxing by an open fire at pubs and cafes where you can meet friendly locals and hear a yarn. Field to Forest Festival is an ideal time to visit, offering an array of activities, 4WD Foraging Tours and Winemakers and Brewers Trail, highlighting unique regional producers. Autumn brings highly sought-after pine mushrooms, so why not join informative Foraging Tours to receive the whole ‘forest experience’. Seasonal events attract a following such as Oberon’s Agricultural Show, Rodeo, Outdoor Month and Open Gardens. Wander through magnificent Mayfield Garden, open 363 days of the year, notably the largest cool climate garden in the Southern Hemisphere.
Oberon offers many opportunities to reconnect in nature with the family and make lifetime memories for free or on a budget. Gold was discovered in 1823 and the region is still well known for sapphire, zircon and gold which attract fossickers, a fun activity for all the family. Nothing better than being in the outdoors panning for gold or sieving for gemstones in creeks to find your first bit of treasure! 4WD and horse ride scenic trails or cycle sealed historic rail trail and exhilarating MBTs meandering through bush. Stretch your legs on local bushwalks or further afield world heritage Kanangra Boyd National Park’s waterfalls and jaw-dropping lookouts to Kanangra Walls. Be guided through the world’s oldest limestone caves at Jenolan and outside, look for native wildlife including kangaroos, wombats and platypus. Take a rewarding paddle in your kayak on Lake Oberon, open to anglers all year, free-camp, BBQ your trout and sit back to watch sunsets over the lake. Drive picturesque countryside to nearby local historic villages, find wineries, art galleries, delicious country pub lunches, or simply picnic by the riverbank.
Oberon is the hidden gem of the Central Tablelands and these are just some of the attractions, so why not stay a few days. Choose from luxury bed and breakfasts, farm stays and unique truffle hunts or simply camping under a blanket of stars in nature!
